I was stopped in traffic, about 500 feet from where a highway offramp came onto the street. A car came off the highway and accelerated, not noticing that the traffic ahead (me!) was stopped. He hit me from behind at about 25 miles an hour.
I heard him accelerating, and had at least a second to prepare. I took my foot off the brake and pushed back in the seat. The impact drove my car into the car ahead. I released the brake because that would lessen the impact for me.
The woman in the car ahead jumped out, steaming mad at me, but quickly changed her tune. The car of the guy who hit me (BMW 5 series) was totaled. He had been on the phone.
The funniest part was when the cop got there. I wanted to make sure he got my story, and he said, in as many word "Look, you can leave now, I've been investigating accidents for twenty five years and the one thing I know is that the guy in the middle is never at fault".
