Why are all the swans in the UK owned by the Queen?

No one is really sure, because the origin of the tradition is lost in history. We don't even know quite when it began. However, these days the Queen only exercises this prerogative on certain parts of the River Thames and its tributaries. The swans are marked in an annual ceremony in order to keep track  of their population and health.
