Shortly after actor Anton Yelchin was found dead as the result of a freak auto accident, reports surfaced that his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee may have been part of a recall that could have prevented the incident.
The 27-year-old actor was reportedly found pinned between the car and a brick gate post at the end of a steep driveway. The Grand Cherokee recall, which was issued in April for more than 800,000 vehicles, stems from the gear shifter.
According to reports, it can be difficult at times to tell whether the car is in park. The recall would install software to address the problem.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has responded to the claims that it may have been related to the recall, saying that it plans to conduct a “thorough investigation” of the crash.

FCA US extends its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Yelchin. The company is in contact with the authorities and is conducting a thorough investigation. It is premature to speculate on the cause of this tragedy.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that it received more than 300 complaints related to the Grand Cherokee’s gear shifter, plus 121 crashes and 41 injuries.
