How does an average American gun-owning citizen rationally justify his/her possession of gun(s)?

As a gun owner, I justify it very easily. If someone attacks my family, it is up to me to defend them. The fact that a home invading rapist who will most likely also have a gun, might get shot is not something I worry about all that much.
