What is the most humane gesture you have ever encountered?

I don't know if this counts as a humane gesture, but once my mum and I took our rabbit to the local animal shelter for a bonding session. In the reception when we were about to leave, we saw a cockroach perched on the top of our rabbit's animal carrier, its antennae swaying delightfully.

My mum and I both hate bugs, especially cockroaches. So my mum panicked and tried mercilessly to swipe the little creature off with her shoe. But not before the receptionist saw the commotion and rushed over.

"Don't hurt him!" She exclaimed.

We then watched in awe as she crouched down and gently nudged the cockroach into her palm.

"There now," she coaxed as she carefully lowered her hand to the floor. She then watched with universal adoration as it scrambled off and across the tiles.

I couldn't believe it. How did she not find—I won't deny it—disgust in touching one of these creatures:

Maybe my dislike for cockroaches isn't something everyone shares. But rarely do you see an insect being treated with such care by a human, most of whom would readily squash it beneath their feet. Showing respect to all living things, if you ask me, is a most humane gesture. The cockroach was lucky.
