I don't play extremely difficult video games because I don't enjoy frustrating repetition, and I don't have the hand-eye coordination for it. If the game is hard for a young gamer, it will certainly be impossible for me, especially now that I am developing arthritis.
I have been told that Ninja Gaiden was one of the hardest games of all time. Demon's Souls was another. The various Rogue-like games (Nethack, etc.) were also particularly difficult because you only got one life, you could not save them, and it was very easy to make a simple mistake that killed you.
There's a freeware version of Tetris that tries to figure out which shape you need most and then refuses to give it to you, taunting you by putting it on the screen and saying, "Won't give you this one!" It's called Bastard Tetris. All Tetris games are unwinnable, but this one is especially hard.
