It is essentially 'buffer time'.
He is approaching your car, he has no idea who you are, he has no idea what you are going to do and like most humans he values his life and the safety of others.
By asking you some simple questions he can ascertain pretty quickly if you're a threat or not. It beats asking you "Did you rate Bradley Cooper in Guardian's of the Galaxy?" although the answer to both questions is just as irrelevant - you'd just be confused with one of them whereas to ask where you've been is a question you might expect and is designed to put you at ease.
If you're not at ease this may indicate something's amiss. It could be as simple nerves or it could be you've hacked your family to death and they're in the back of your truck. Just remember for ever normal person he's met that day like you, he's met more weirdos who could be just innocent village idiots missing their calling or they could be your worst nightmare about to explode into a sea of violence.
