Under Armour drops hunter’s sponsorship as criticism mounts

How should you handle backlash when an influential partner missteps?

Under Armour cut ties with a female hunter after her husband and business partner posted a video of himself killing a bear with a spear.

Josh Bowmar posted the video—which was shot in Alberta, Canada with a GoPro camera strapped to the spear—in June. It took a while for the post to make its rounds. The video has since been made private on YouTube, but, according to Mirror, Bowmar “leaves the animal to die a slow, excruciating death.”

Several animal rights activists—and even seasoned hunters—condemned the video.

Humane Society International official Masha Kalinina issued the following statement:

The glee with which the hunter celebrates spearing the bear’s vital organs is a cheap act for the camera and the sick fans of this YouTube channel.

A Change.org petition called on Under Armour to remove the Bowmars from their payroll, even though Sarah Bowmar was the only one who actually had a relationship with the company.

Under Armour spokeswoman Danielle Daly told Reuters, "The method used to harvest this animal was reckless and we do not condone it.”

Sarah Bowmar issued a statement of her own on Instagram:

I love and care about all of you and wanted to let you know that due to recent circumstances and media attention of a LEGAL hunt, @underarmour and @uahunt have terminated their relationship with us due to international social pressure from anti hunters. It really breaks my heart, we lived and breathed the brand for years and gave them everything that we had. We will never speak ill of the company. Just wanted to let everything know our current situation and how heartbroken we are when we did nothing wrong. Receiving that phone call was one of the hardest things I've ever went through. Don't be silent in this. If this bothers you — please reach out to UA and let them know.

She’s also been busy responding to critics on Twitter:

Supporters of the Bowmars have called for their own boycott of Under Armour’s products, Business Insider reported.
