Why is Thor described as a "demi-god" in the advertising for The Avengers feature film?

I assume you are referring to this line:

Tony Stark:  "Yeah, takes us a while to get any traction I'll give you that one. But let's do a head count here. Your brother, the demigod. A super soldier, living legend who kinda lives up to the legend. A man with breathtaking anger management issues. A couple of master assassins and YOU, big fella, you've managed to piss off every single one of them."

In movie answer: Tony Stark didn't major in mythology.  He probably doesn't know a demigod is a being with one parent that is a god and another that is not.  He probably meant it as a way of saying minor deity or godlike but not really a god.

In reality answer: labeling a character in a movie as a god can only harm the box-office.
