The creators of games, movies and music would justifably like to obtain as much money as possible from their work. They lobby politicians to pass laws to enforce draconian intellectual property laws.
However, the work of musicians and actors and game makers cannot be distributed without all the technological inventions that led to game systems, ipods, iphones, televisions, etc.
Why shouldn't Thomas Edison's heirs recieve all the revenue generated from music sales and movie sales? After all he created the phonograph and movie production equipment? Why should the patent expire after an arbitrary amount of time? What should be the morally justified split between the technology provider and the artist?
The intellectual property laws were created to protect special interest groups. Generally these are wealthy artists and companies in the West. Should individuals in developing nations be deprived the ability to listen to music and watch movies simply because they rather spend their limited resources feeding and educating their children? Certainly I do not think so.
