How does the military detect a military aircraft disguised as a civilian aircraft?

There are many different giveaways; it's rarely one thing that's a give-away. But several factors that commonly make one question whether an aircraft is not a civilian aircraft:

  • Its flight path doesn't match any civilian flight plan - the military (and civilian) air traffic agencies have access to all of those.
  • Its flight path suddenly and dramatically departs from what previously appeared to be predictable and/or civilian flight path, e.g. taking an unexpected 90 degree turn, or dramatically descending unexpectedly.
  • It turns off its transponder.
  • Intelligence reports - human, electronic, other.
