Collins, in his autobiography Carrying the Fire, expressed no feelings at all of having been slighted by not actually walking on the moon. He was keenly aware of the critical role played by being Command Module Pilot and was honored to have been able to contribute to completing a successful mission. In fact, Collins said that he actually enjoyed the solitude and freedom he experienced in flying solo in the Command Module especially when he flew around the back side of the moon and was the only human on that side of the universe. He also was aware that the odds were great that regardless of what happened to the moon walking crewmates he would be returning to earth.
Collins said that his only regret was that he was the one human who was not able to actually view the live television coverage of the first moonwalk.
