NHL expands to Las Vegas

Las Vegas will finally have a major professional sports team.

The National Hockey League will welcome an expansion team to the city as early as 2017, which presents a new and interesting opportunity for marketers and brand managers. The NHL executive committee was reportedly unanimous in its decision to expand, but it still must pass a vote at the Board of Governors meeting on June 22.

Billionaire Bill Foley must come up with a $500 million expansion fee, but the majority of reports seem assured that his investment group will have no problem meeting it.

Thus far, the yet-to-be-named team has seen more than 14,000 season-ticket deposits, and it will play in the newly built 17,500-seat T-Mobile Arena, which is located near the famous Las Vegas Strip.

In terms of marketing, Foley is said to be partial to naming the team the Black Knights—the same moniker as his financial services group.

The team has also committed to building a $17 million practice facility that the community would be able out of season.

Since the deal is not complete, there have been no official statements from either side.
