Russia: How did Vladimir Putin become so popular in Russia?

The West's advice caused disaster for Russia under Yeltsin.  This has been hushed up in the West, through the influence of the same bunglers who failed in the 1990s.  But the economy shrank, the death rate increased and vast amounts of wealth got into the hands of oligarchs who had no talent for productive industry, just skill at legalised theft.

Yeltsin put Putin into power to stop the rot and he succeeed.
