Wal-Mart is testing the waters of grocery delivery with a pair of ride-hailing services.
The retail giant will team up with Uber and Lyft to test a service where drivers for those companies will be picking up users’ groceries and delivering them to their doorstep.
“We’ll start small and let our customers guide us, but testing new things like last-mile delivery allow us to better evaluate the various ways we can best serve our customers how, when and where they need us,” Wal-Mart chief operating officer, Michael Bender, wrote in a blog post.
The service will compete with the likes of Amazon’s grocery service—Amazon Fresh—and existing players such as Peapod and Instacart.
The process is pretty simple: Wal-Mart shoppers can order their groceries online, choose home delivery, and for a $7-$10 charge, an employee will order an Uber or a Lyft (or another startup service called Deliv, which has worked on a similar project with Sam’s Club) to pick up and deliver the goods to the shopper.
WEBINAR: Master Paid Social Media and Content Promotion.
The service will start as a pilot program in San Jose and Denver.
“We’ll start small and let our customers guide us,” Bender says.
