Most of the people I knew at Stanford were pretty smart, but by no means all. Nor were they all rich or straight-A students. (I was neither.) But they get so many applications that they have to winnow them down somehow. You need to have something going for you. I think in my case it was an unusual childhood.
If you want to go to Stanford, don't be boring. You don't have to be brilliant, but you mustn't be boring.
