If I leave my one-year-old dog with a friend for about 10 months, will he remember me when I come back?

Yes he/she absolutely will especially if you've raised the dog since being a puppy. Long-term memory (even in humans) is most strongly associated with a sense of smell. When you return and your dog smells you you'll see the dog light up and go nuts to see you.

I know this from firsthand experience. My first dog was raised by myself and an ex-girlfriend. We broke up after the dog turned 1. The dog stayed with me. When we met up a few years later my dog instantly knew who she was after a quick sniff and happily reunited.

Dogs are incredible creatures don't underestimate their abilities. To further the bond when you leave either to drop them off at the vet for boarding for a weekend or for a longer trip like you're taking leave a shirt with your scent on it.  It will help reinforce the bond between the two of you.
