Who exactly would have been the best Vice Presidential pick for Al Gore in 2000?

I don't think that Al Gore lost because of Joe Lieberman. Al Gore lost because of Al Gore. It's conventional wisdom that the VP nominee shouldn't outshine the Presidential nominee. Al Gore (especially compared to the president he was hoping to succeed) was about as compelling as chewing on dry cardboard. Given that, the short list was going be very, very short.

With that said: if he was trying to distance himself from Clinton and his sexual indiscretions, he should've had a woman as his running mate. I actually think an interesting choice might've been former Texas Governor Ann Richards. Yes, she lost the governorship to Gore's opponent George W. Bush and yes – contrary to my first paragraph – she would've totally outshone Gore. She would've, however, brought way more energy to the ticket than Lieberman did.
