According to my mother, she wanted me to have a first name that would prevent white Americans from discriminating against me. She knew that Jeremy was not usually associated with a Black American. Her rationale was that it would help me when applying for university and jobs. She also wanted me to be baptized Jeremiah as a baby.
My middle name is Markeith. My mother loved the name Marcus and Keith. So she merged them together to create a unique name.
Finally, my father never signed my birth certificate. Thompson is my mother's maiden name.
