Samsung recalls 2.8 million washing machines

Samsung’s recall woes continue—though the latest crisis is not smartphone-related.

The company is recalling 2.8 million top-load washing machines due to “excessive vibration.”

In one case, Consumerist reported, the washing machine vibrated so violently that it broke a user’s jaw. Another injured a customer’s shoulder.

"The washing machine top can unexpectedly detach from the washing machine chassis during use, posing a risk of injury from impact," the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports.

There have been 733 total reports.

Samsung is offering to fix or exchange the washers, or refund people who purchased them within the last 30 days.

The company has also identified the source the problem: bulky loads on a high-speed cycle. Consumers are being told to wash bulky items like bedding on low-speed cycles.

John Herrington, general manager of home appliances for Samsung Electronics America, said in a statement:

Our priority is to reduce any safety risks in the home and to provide our customers with easy and simple choices in response to the recall.

Consumers who think their washing machine may be affected are encouraged to check out the CPSC website.
