I was probably about 5 years old when my school was called into the chapel. My memories are fuzzy, but I remember one thing for sure - they had a period in which students could come up to the stage and announce what it is they wanted to do for a living. The opportunity was specifically for students In my sister's class, who were around 8 or 9 - but, something in me told me that my dreams just had to be shared up on that stage. I remember feeling as though it was very urgent; I typically have stage fright.
So, I marched up the steps and grabbed the microphone from a confused teacher. She probably expected me to make fart noises in the mic, being the age I was. Still, she asked me, “Hi sweetie, what do you want to be when you grow up?”
Barely allowing for a pause, I professed, “I want to be a dog!”
Silence. And then laughter. I'd felt so proud and intelligent until everyone began laughing.
Fortunately, my best friend at the time marched up right behind me and demanded the microphone.
“I want to be a pig when I grow up.”
If that's not friendship, I don't know what is.
