The Iceni were a Celtic tribe in Britain. As the Roman Empire expanded into the British Isles, they were forced to become a client state - their royal family still allowed to rule, but subordinate to Rome. When the king who had granted client status died, he left the kingdom jointly to Emperor Nero and his two daughters, hoping that the client state situation would be allowed to continue. However, Roman leaders decided it would be better to instead annex the Iceni lands directly and call in its loans. As a prelude to this invasion, as a way to humiliate and break the spirit of the Iceni, the King's widow was flogged and his two daughters raped.
