What medical condition do you have that you thought was absolutely normal?

I lack Stereopsis. As a consequence of my slight Strabismus, my brain cannot synthesize binocular vision and I can’t perceive depth. This means I can’t enjoy 3D movies, I have trouble catching an object you’re throwing in my direction and I spill water when trying to pour it, because when I think the pitcher is just above the glass, it can actually be an inch closer or an inch farther. Driving and parallel parking are also a challenge.

It’s quite a common condition, but I didn’t realize I had it until I was in my twenties and got a medical interview for my first job. The doctor showed me a hologram with two circles and asked me which one was closer. I really couldn’t tell.

Until then, I thought this was the normal way of viewing the world. It taught me an interesting lesson on perspective and perception.
