What would a person from the 1950s think of today?

I once asked my mother if it was better in the "old days". She said "No way! Life was really hard for women then! Just ironing all those cotton shirts back then was a tedious, miserable job. Just being able to avoid ironing so much now is a major luxury."

So I asked her what the big differences were between now and then. She said there was a lot more open space in those days; many more trees; fewer people and cars and people walked a lot more but that there were many, many more flies and mosquitoes. Since so many people had garbage pits, there were so many more bugs. She also said the steam trains were very, very noisy and when they went by you had to run out and get your laundry because it would rain cinders onto your clean clothes up to a mile away.

I asked her if the food was better but she said it depended upon how it was made -- the food is just as good today if you take the time to make it properly. And she mentioned that cars were nowhere near as reliable back then as they are now, especially tires. Roads were not in as good shape then as they are now and tire quality was much worse so changing tires was a very frequent thing -- many people even repaired their own tires to save money.
