In order to run for President Senator Obama would have had to file his intention to run with the Federal Election Commission in 2007. Part of that filing process would involve showing proof that he was eligible to run for President. The proof he provided in the filing process was evidently legally satisfactory as he was allowed to run without the FEC kicking up a stink.
Most likely that proof involved his birth certificate.
Therefore he waited until he was ready to run for President then showed his birth certificate to those whose job it is to verify his right to run.
That's all he was required to do.
