A lot of other good answers here but I think there is still the piece of getting your foot in the door that hasn't been addressed. I would certainly start by taking my own initiative and investing time in learning the tools (they're all free!). However, that alone may not always be enough for a company to risk taking a chance on hiring you with no hands on experience in a production system. I would try to get hired at a company who already has a Hadoop implementation in a department or group that leverages the technology but doesn't necessarily require Hadoop skills. Then start working towards getting more hands on experience with large clusters. Eventually you will probably be able to switch to just about any Hadoop based role you would want.
