How is the communist life in Cuba? Are people happy about their life standards that are supplied by the communist party?

I've been to Cuba a few times, these are some of my personal observations:
  • Are Cubans happy with their standard of life? I can't honestly think of any nationality I can say is "happy" with any standard of living, as human nature always wants something better. Greener pastures always sought.
  • Are Cubans content? I'd say yes, for most parts. Most of the complaints I've ever heard are standard ones in most developing nations. For example; not seeing relatives who left the country very often. Or shortage of some basic items seen as luxuries and only for tourists.
  • It is obvious political dissent isn't tolerated, reflected in their uneasiness in opening up too quickly with strangers. Even then, much of the political conversations are veiled and indirect. I think my own experience of growing up in Iran helped me notice this and also decipher the exchanges.
  • I find Cubans to be so full of life. In that sense they are loaded with "happiness". It doesn't take much to have impromptu music and dance parties for no specific reason. There's so much "life" in the air.
  • There's still a certain amount of respect towards Fidel Castro, seen as a sort of father figure by most. Even by those who are not in favor of the system he has established.
  • I sensed mixed feeling towards USA. They like Americans and yet it's hard not to hold them responsible for so much when on a clear day you can see the US ships off the coast enforcing the embargo.
  • They take some amazing achievement for granted, in my opinion. Nearly everybody you meet has a degree, while some of the neighboring island nations suffer from high illiteracy rates. And all of that education is free, same as their rather advanced health care system.
  • They are worldly, drawing on their European as well as African history, and being aware of what else is going on in the world.
  • On that history, I haven't ever sensed any racist attitudes.
  • Considering all they have experienced, I find Cubans to be particularly positive about their future. Maybe this is part of the culture that is so alive.
