How long would the north have survived if they did secede successfully in GoT?

The North survived for thousands of years (the Starks themselves and the Night's Watch both allegedly being ~8,000 years old) before the Targaryens unified the country. It has a brutal climate, a very good choke point in Moat Cailin (which has never been taken from the south) and a pretty hardy people. With winter coming and the Lannisters also, at various times, facing Stannis and dealing with the Faith, they're not in a position to do much damage to the North proper even if they wanted to.

The North declaring its independence was never the problem, or at least, not Robb's critical problem. What doomed that cause in terms of #squadgoals was that Robb was also compelled to defend the Riverlands against the Lannisters, and that's the fight that bogged him down. The ironborn only invaded the North because Robb had left to march south, first to free Ned and then to fight the Lannisters in the Riverlands. If Robb had claimed that the North was independent, sent men to defend the coasts and sat on his ass at Winterfell, there's not much anyone could have done to stop him. I would love to see the Lannisters try to march through the Neck and Moat Cailin uninvited, whilst Howland Reed looks on and thinks, "Are you effing kidding me?" before pumping them full of the best poisons the crannogmen can offer.
