In an unprecedented move, Facebook will permit users to block certain types of ads from appearing in their news feeds.
In a response to feedback from some users that seeing certain types of ads can be painful or unpleasant, the social giant will start testing with blocking some alcohol and parenting ads.
Previously, Facebook only allowed users to opt in to seeing ads around certain topics. This is the first time users will have the option to block an entire category.

“This is an early test that will allow people to hide ad topics they prefer not to see," a Facebook rep told Business Insider. "We are starting with alcohol and parenting since those were the two most common topics that came up in our research."
A rep also told AdAge:
For families who experience the loss of a child, to continue to see ads about parenting and new baby stuff, that can be really upsetting.
The new ad-blocking option is part of an overhaul to Facebook’s ad preferences menu. Execs hope to make things more user-friendly without overhauling the current interface.
