How do you know when it's time to do a redesign?

Redesign is a fuzzy word. You can redesign an interaction, a page, or an entire site.

I think it's important to note that while Facebook (the site referenced in the original question) redesigned the structure of the site, most of the pages and interface patterns remained the exact same.

I think it's a good idea to always be asking yourself: if we built this (this interaction, this page, this site) from the ground up, knowing what we know right now, how would it be different? At a certain point, the benefits of that theoretical design will outweigh the cost of building it and acclimating your users.

I don't believe there's a clear set of rules that will tell you when you ought to redesign. It tends to be the build up of various factors:
  • There are large portions of your site that your users don't ever use or can't find when they try.
  • It's taking longer to make incremental changes than it would be to start from scratch, due to a Frankenstein scenario where elements are crammed into places that weren't designed for them.
  • Your current design is preventing new, valuable projects from coming together because they can't live anywhere on the site, or the brand isn't extendable enough, etc.
Essentially, when your current design becomes a substantial bottleneck for continued progress.

I haven't included a few reasons to redesign that are often big motivators in that fickle real world: the site looks stale, it's been a while since our last redesign, a redesign gets press and people's attention. These are all terrible reasons.
