Facebook is introducing live audio, which gives a few select publishers the chance to communicate “on air” for listeners in real time.
Live audio will bring audio-first programming—think podcasts and talk radio—directly to users’ News Feeds.
Facebook announced the first publishers that will have access to the tool, and the list is a mix of traditional media, book publishers and writers themselves. It includes BBC World Service , LBC,Harper Collins, and authors Adam Grant and Brit Bennett.
In a blog post, a pair of Facebook reps say:
From interviews to book readings, we’re excited about the layer of interactivity that Live Audio brings to both the broadcaster and listener. Just as with a live video on Facebook, listeners can discover live audio content in News Feed, ask questions and leave reactions in real time during the broadcast, and easily share with their friends.
The Live Audio option is also meant to give publishers with low connectivity the option to broadcast live.
For listeners, the feature will continue to play as they browse Facebook. For Android users, it’ll continue to play even if they leave the Facebook app. Apple users will have to stay in the app to keep listening, but they’ll be able to continue to browse their feed.
WORKSHOP: Become your own media outlet and apply journalistic practices within your organization.
Much of the reaction on social media has been positive:
Free broadcasting + reach could make Facebook Live Audio a hit with news radio, authors, field reporters, musicians https://t.co/i1r7y7rBJD

Facebook will roll out the feature more broadly in 2017.
