I actually had someone try something similar to this recently. Tried spreading rumours (some true, most false) about me.
I only found out after a friend came to me. She didn't ask if they were true, only told me what had been said. I asked if she believed it. She told me that a bunch of it wasn't a secret (I.e. she and everyone else already knew), some of it was obviously not something that would apply to me so total lies, and the rest no one gave a shit if it was true or not.
If anything, the fact that people found the whole situation amusing meant a bunch of people who previously didn't talk to me much suddenly became my friends.
Reputation. Be honest with people, be kind and respectful, for God's sake keep to your code, and you'll gain the right kind of reputation to not have to worry about these things.
