In February 2010 I was working as an overnight stocker at Walmart. About 5AM I felt a sharp pain in my left side and felt sick. I asked if I could go home but my manager insisted it was due to lack of sleep and I ended up staying 30 mins late. I went home took some pain medicine and tried to sleep. About 10AM, I had to use the bathroom and was in immense pain. I remember sitting on the toilet and then laying on the floor being shaken awake by my girlfriend at the time saying she called the ambulance. I was sweaty and completely flushed-there wasn’t even color in my green eyes. When I got to the ER, they set up an MRI and as I was waiting to be put on the table, I felt warm and closed my eyes. I was again awakened to see about 5 or 6 doctors surrounding me with a look of panic and relief at the same time-I was clinically dead for a minute!
Turns out, the pain I felt at 5AM was my spleen rupturing and was bleeding to death internally until I was stabilized with minor surgery and an immense amount of blood and saline. It was a surreal experience and I honestly don’t remember seeing a white light (or in my case fire and brimstone).
How many musicians can say they joined the “27 club” and lived to tell the tale!
