Which current engineers or engineering managers would make great founder CEOs?

At Facebook, there are at least five individuals in engineering management positions who I believe could fit this bill:

  • Andrew Bosworth
  • David Fetterman
  • James Wang
  • Kang-Xing Jin
  • Aditya Agarwal

All of these people possess high levels of technical acumen, broad appreciation for non-technical "soft" functions, people management skills, communication skills, a track record of getting it done, and a sense of personal grit and determination.

It's not clear to me that they would all want to found startups or be CEOs, but I believe that if they were to find themselves in the position of having a project that was taking off and becoming a company that they have what it takes to grow into being capable CEOs if they so chose.  In the coming years as Facebook matures, if any of these individuals leaves the company to found their own startup, well - it'll be another race for the other VCs to beat Matt Cohler in funding them.  ;-)
