It's funny, I just asked a group of teenagers if they would go through elementary school again.
(As a substitute high school teacher, I like to take roll by asking a question— usually a “Would you rather ___ or ___?” It's a quick way to get to know that day’s students, and maybe spark a real discussion, too.)
You know what almost all of the teens said? Yes.
When I asked the same question about high school, most of them emphatically said no.
Being a teenager is alternately miserable and amazing.
It's the hardest stage of life you will go though up to that point. You are forced to make decisions that you've never made before, like who you're going to be and what you're going to do as a career. You have to do all this while the decision center of your brain has yet to fully develop. No pressure.
You also get to experience real freedom, bond with your peers, and make memories that you will actually remember for your whole lifetime. Some people claim it was the greatest years of their life. It wasn't all that for me, for it could be for others.
I'm 23 now. Would I like to start over as a 13 year old again?
No, definitely not!
I like the person I get to be at 23 far too much to give it up. I spend enough time everyday with teenagers to remember how challenging those years can be, and I'm so glad that I've learned those lessons and moved on.
