I've heard that line of reasoning myself. It's a sign of a person desperate to believe something that is contradicted by empirical data.
When first I heard it, I said “so basically, you're saying God is a liar. God gave us reason, then deliberately set up false evidence to deceive us when we used that reason. A liar God doesn't sound worth worshipping to me. Are you sure it's God you're worshipping? The devil’s work has many tools, but a lie is the handle that fits them all.”
Of course, that was back when I was still a believer. Interesting that this tired, silly argument is still being made; I first heard it more than 30 years ago.
