Every kitten gets the lecture from it’s mother as soon as it is weaned. It goes something like this.
“Humans are useful creatures. They have warm soft laps and strong fingers that can scratch behind your ears and under your chins.They like it when you purr. It makes them feel good, which in turn motivates them to give you treats.
“Keep your humans happy, but not too happy. Never let them get complacent. They need to know who’s in charge. They will want you to do things. Nonsensical things, like staying off the counters where they have left food sitting out. Perfectly good food that they are not using. So wait until their backs are turned before jumping on the counter. They’ll never notice, and if they do, just give them the look. The one we’ve been practicing. Yes. Just like that, as if you have no idea what they want and you think they’re totally out of line telling you what to do. Puurfect, my darlings.”
