If so, I certainly don't feel like one. A genius is supposed to be someone who can see things that others can't, someone who can solve apparently impossible problems in his head, a person to whom great achievement comes easily. I've had a productive career, but it has all been done through very hard work, by patience and persistence, by accepting frustration and being willing to admit when I was wrong, by learning from my mistakes, by listening to others, accepting their criticisms but also knowing when to ignore them. And by being lucky.
I've been introduced as a "certified genius" because of my MacArthur Prize, but I know lots of other MacArthur prize winners (we have meetings now and then) and as nearly as I can tell, every one of them would share my opening paragraph. It is a great group of people, and I am proud to be on that list with them, but I didn't meet anyone in that group to whom their success came without struggle.
