My understanding and awareness of the conflict in Viet Nam.
In 1964, the situation in Viet Nam was getting worse. I graduated from High School on a Friday in June and on Monday morning I began my nearly continuos employment until 2010. I was without a job for 1week in all those years.
In 1966, the Viet Nam situation began to grow worse. I had signed up for the draft, as required by law. Now they were going to initiate a lottery system. Everyone was going to get a number and each week a number was going to be drawn. Your number came up, and you were drafted into the U.S. Army. Combat. Jungle warfare. Possible death. Scary.
I went to the U.S. Air Force recruiter and signed up.
Joining the military was the best thing I ever did:
- I was taught a skill, useful for life!
- I was taught to obey authority.
- I was taught responsibility.
- I was taught how to work on a team.
- I was taught to work long hours.
- I was taught the value of money.
- I was allowed to use the G.I. Bill.
- paid for my college education
I was never deployed to Viet Nam. I spent many winters (4) in Northern Michigan at K.I. Sawyer AFB http://qr.ae/8xZaL
I worked on, and got to fly in one of these:

Not a bad outcome for one small decision as a 20 year old. Glad I did it!
