Was it appropriate for Meryl Streep to use her Golden Globes speech to attack Donald Trump?

Here’s what she said:

There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective, and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.

It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.

This statement appears to be a true statement about the feelings Streep had about an incident. Her description of what happened is accurate. The incident itself is captured on video, and people can see it for themselves. Having been the live-in attendant for a disabled person and having spent considerable time involved with many disabled friends, I have zero doubt about the intent of Mr. Trump in making his gesture. I have zero doubt that his denial of an intent to mock is mendacious.

So the question becomes: was it appropriate for an American citizen to use a public platform to express her honest feelings about the conduct of a public official, which she accurately described?

The answer, to me, is simple: not only is this appropriate; it is one of the highest forms of patriotism and real service to the nation.

Describing this as an “attack” is, in my view, inappropriate.

She accurately labeled a bully for what he was. That’s not “attacking” the bully; that’s an effort to be a corrective force and an important step in telling people the rather important message: This is not right, and we should not accept it.
