This one is a myth. (The true story is here). But it’s popular just because it so effortlessly gets to the heart of what many people think of as British.
The BBC stopped broadcasting television during the Second World War. The last item transmitted on 1 September 1939 was a cartoon, followed by an announcer explaining that the TV service was being shut down. Then silence.
When the service resumed in June 1946, the same announcer came on:
“As I was saying, before we were so rudely interrupted…”
