This is a room full of shoes. That’s all - shoes.
They are shoes stolen from people the Nazis murdered.
Big shoes, from grown men. Small shoes, from little children. Pretty shoes. Ugly, old shoes. All kinds of shoes.
Each pair represents someone abducted, transported in conditions worse than animals would be allowed, herded into a room and gassed.
For the crime of being Jewish. Or Roma. Or handicapped. Or gay.
It makes me shudder to this day.
