And I quote…
“A poor man cannot afford to own cheap things.”
Not only is it very true, but it’s also one of the secrets to escaping poverty. When you eschew the cheap things and save for a high-quality item, you’re selecting for value. That’s what people with lots of money do, not because they have to anymore, but because it’s a habit they cultivated while acquiring their wealth.
I received that little gem when I was fresh out of college and about to start purchasing all the appliances of daily living for my first solo apartment, things like a vacuum cleaner, toaster oven, crock pot, clothes iron and barbecue grill among others. I’m extremely pleased to report that now almost 15 years later, I still own and use all of them. Better still, I’ve never had to repair any of them and they all still look to be “in style.”
So thank you, old man at the dive bar next to my first post-college job. You saved me from becoming just another victim of the disposable goods market that ensnares so many in the first world today.
