What (trivial) knowledge might save your life one day?

Establish a secret codeword with your child.

Make it absolutely clear to them that they have to verify the codeword if any stranger comes up to them and claims that he was sent by you. Most child kidnappers follow the same modus-operandi - Approach the child when he is alone and say, “Your dad met with an accident and he has asked me to get you. Come with me”.

The codeword will save your child’s life.

You suspect that the person/car behind you is following you.

Take four consecutive right turns. If they are still behind you, then they are following you.

It’s late in the night. The road is empty. Luckily an empty autorickshaw comes along. But the driver looks suspicious.

Before getting into the auto, take out your phone and call your dad. Talk loudly so that the driver can overhear you. Tell your dad the location at which you are boarding the auto and auto’s license plate number. If your phone has no reception, then make a pretend phone call. Just make sure that the driver hears you clearly.

You just met with a serious accident. You are still conscious but need immediate medical help. A crowd has gathered around you.

Don’t wait for someone to automatically come forward and help you. Wherever there is a crowd, there is automatic diffusion of responsibility. Everybody assumes that somebody else will help.

So, don’t just randomly shout - “Someone, please help me”. Instead, point your finger towards a particular individual in front of the crowd and speak loudly like this - “You, in the red shirt, call for an ambulance”. Your purpose is to signal out the individual and clearly tell him what to do.

Empty road. Dark night. A man ambushes you, pulls out a knife and threatens you to give him your wallet.

Don’t try to think of innovative ways to escape. Just surrender your wallet and pray that he leaves you alone. You know why you hear so many amazing stories where people used just their wits to escape the mugger? Because for 1 such story of heroism, there are 99 stories where the victim tried something witty and mugger pulled the knife. It’s just that you don’t hear their stories. Because dead men tell no tales.
